Handheld frame drums are among the oldest known musical instruments and are patterned after the grain sieves used by women in ancient times. They are hoop-shaped drums with a diameter that is much greater than their depth. In prehistoric times, their rhythms helped shamans and seers attain the sacred trance state necessary for healing and prophecy. The rituals of the earliest known religions evolved around the beat of frame drums. At this workshop Joy Sanders will offer an inspiring evening of connecting with the feminine spirit through the frame drum. The workshop will teach participants basic strokes, rhythms and patterns on the tambourine, and uses of tambourine in spiritual context. No musical experience is required and drums will be provided.
